May 26-June 2, 2003
Musical Passages is extremely pleased to invite the Vassar Piano Trio to work with us in a coached workshop of chamber music with and without piano, at one of the most beautiful and interesting historic sites in France, the lovely Moulin d’Andé, a designated Historic Monument. I have visited here many times to enjoy a concert, a weekend or a longer stay. In the ancient buildings and beautiful park which make up this magical place, you are sure to find yourself in the company of artists, musicians, writers and other creative people. Owner Suzanne Lipinska has worked for over 40 years to create a charming and welcoming cultural and artistic center, with a lovely Théâtre du Moulin for concerts, plays and cabaret performances. Those of us old enough to remember the film Jules et Jim will recognize memorable scenes shot there.
T he Vassar Piano Trio (Todd Crow, Luis Garcia-Renart and Betty-Jean Hagen) are well known to concert audiences and students throughout the United States and Europe. They will offer a concert at the end of the week, to include works by Shostakovitch, Haydn and Schubert. Workshop assignments will be selected from their program or other works which participants and coaches may identify for groups comprised of piano/strings, piano/winds, strings, winds, or mixed ensembles. Our coaches are experienced chamber music coaches at prestigious institutions such as Yale, Vassar and Bard Colleges, as well as performers with world class credits throughout North America, Europe, Central and South America.
We will have coached sessions each day in assigned groups, and there will be time for informal playing and sightseeing in this beautiful area of Normandy, with many interesting places to visit nearby, including Monet’s home at Giverny, the Chateau Gaillard, Les Andelys, the ancient port of Honfleur and the historic city of Rouen.
Luis Garcia-Renart will offer a two day master class for cellists to study the Bach Solo Suites immediately before this workshop.
The Moulin, restored under Suzanne’s artful eye, today offers 35 sleeping rooms with private baths, decorated with period antiques and many lovely things. There are numerous studios and rooms to play in. The theater, which also includes a painting and sculpture gallery, has been outfitted with a lovely dining area where meals are served on an enclosed terrace or in open air in good weather. Other meals will be taken in the gardens or main dining room overlooking the oldest part of the mill, through which the River Seine passes. Abdullah, whom I remember from my first visit about 15 years ago, still overseas the kitchen and truly delightful meals.
From Paris you can travel to Andé by train or car in little over an hour. The nearest railroad station is Val de Reuil, only a short taxi ride to the Moulin. There is a discount offered for pre-formed groups who make application by the deadline of February 7, 2003. Order of application and balance of instruments will be considered if we need to make these kinds of decisions, so early application and especially application as part of a pre-formed group is strongly encouraged. Special airfares on USAIR can be arranged please contact Musical Passages for information.
