For a new venue in a lovely but little known corner of the Mediterranean, we will travel to Malta, an island country located between Sicily and North Africa. Maltese people are very friendly, cultured and welcoming to visitors. In addition to their own language of Maltese, everyone speaks English and many people speak Italian and other languages. Malta was “visited” through the centuries by many European and Middle Eastern peoples, and the evidence of their stay is everywhere: in the architecture, the cuisine, the language, the fervent Roman Catholic religion of most Maltese. But Maltese people have a unique charm which is more than just a composite of others, and we will definitely spend time with Maltese musician colleagues to appreciate this. Composer professor Manoel Pirotta will surely aid us in making musical friends, as will violinist and ACMP member Joe Camilleri, and Malta National Symphony violist AnneMarie Chetcuti.
There are many historic sites to be visited all over the island, and it’s sister island Gozo. We will play each day in the capital city of Valletta, next door to the Manoel Theater, a lovely 18th Century opera house where we can attend concerts and theater events. In addition to visiting the many interesting sites in Valletta, the historic bus system is centered just outside the main gate, and leads to every other part of the country on old and charming buses which cost next to nothing to ride. We will plan excursions to some definite “must visit” spots like the Hypogeum (The Copper Age Temple) and other prehistoric sites, the old medieval cities of Rabat and Mdina, and the fishing villages all around Malta.
Our sea-front hotel, the Kennedy Nova, is located about 15 minutes from Valletta on The Strand in the charming town of Sliema. All rooms are air-conditioned, equipped with color TV, hair dryer, direct dial telephone and mini-bar. There is a roof-top swimming pool, and a fitness room with sauna and spa. Prices include room and full board, organization of daily playing, and a concert ticket at the Manoel Theater or the Mediterranean Conference Centre.
