Play in the New Year at our eighth New Years week of chamber music and celebration in the foothills of the Ronda Mountains in a beautiful “pueblo blanco” not far from Malaga. We will join old friends for a relaxing week of chamber music and sampling the wines and cuisine of the south of Spain, during a season of festivities and Spanish warmth. With local musicians we celebrate this New Year with a concert at Jimena’s Misericordia, and begin the year with another triumph. Last year we played to a standing room only crowd and a warm welcome from the mayor. We hope Cellist Lucy Wilding and other professional musician friends will again join us on this trip.
Each day we play in small groups, which may include strings, winds, pianos. Lunch or dinner each day will be taken together, with the remainder of the day free to spend as you like (sightseeing, more playing, hiking, biking, or just snoozing). Hikers, bikers, and tennis players have been known to enjoy themselves in past years. Playing rooms and music are available throughout the day for those who are really chamber music junkies.
On New Years Eve we celebrate early and often, present a concert, have an elegant dinner, and even dance in the town square. New Years Day we keep free for recuperation, playing some early music for those who like, eating tapas with a hair of the dog that bit us, and relaxing. Each day there will also be time to sample the fare in nearby restaurants, cafes, and tapas bars.
We might make a trip to the Roman town of Bolonia (Baelo Claudia) to have a fish meal right on the beach and look at the digs. Jimena offers many interesting side trips before or after the music week: Ronda, Gibraltar, Jerez de la Frontera, and even beautiful Sevilla. Local friends Bob Mann and Patrick Elvin lead the avid hikers.
Very comfortable sleeping accommodations are in single or shared rooms, each with private bath. Early bookings are advised and will be assigned according to order of request and availability for this very popular week. The Hostal El Anon, a lovely inn created by our host Suzanne Odell in the heart of this Andalucian village of some 5,000 inhabitants has only 11 rooms, a lively bar and a wonderful restaurant. We may also stay at other village locations. Lunch or dinner is provided for all participants at the El Anon and other village restaurants.
